Effects of Colestipol and Ginseng Saponin on the Cholesterol Metabolism in Mice

Abstract
The effects of colestipol and ginseng saponin on serum lipid levels in normal, cholesterol-fed and atherogenic diet-fed mice were examined by serum lipid analysis. In atherogenic diet-fed mice, the levels of total serum cholesterol and
triglyceride
were
increased by 20% and 190 respectively. The rise in total serum cholesterol and triglyceride in atherogenic diet fed groups were not directly influenced by the cholesterol contents of atherogenic diets. Cinseng saponin treatment on the same groups
has
resulted in reduction of total serum cholesterol and triglyceride by 4.2% and 38% respectively. Colestipol treatment on this diet-fed group appears to lower atherogenesis index suggesting that colestipol play an importatn role of depression of
atherosclerosis. However, treatment of colestipol and ginseng saponin seem to have negative effect of on the changes in total concentration of HDL lipids in atherogenic diet-fed mice.
